Power of the tongue - James

“The tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things.” — James 3:5 James chapter 3 gives us one of the strongest teachings in Scripture about the power of our words. James reminds us that something very small can exercise tremendous influence. A bit directs a horse, a small rudder turns a large ship, and a tiny spark can set an entire forest on fire. So it is with the tongue. Our Words Reveal Our Kingdom Jesus taught that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34). Our words reveal what is ruling within us. When the kingdom of self rules the heart, the tongue easily becomes an instrument of criticism, anger, gossip, pride, jealousy, and division. But when the Kingdom of God rules within us, our speech increasingly reflects Christ—grace, truth, encouragement, peace, mercy, and love. James confronts us with a serious contradiction: “Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.” — James 3:9 How can we worship God on Sunday and tear people down on Monday? James says, “My brethren, these things ought not so to be.” The Tongue Cannot Be Changed by Willpower Alone James makes an astonishing statement: “The tongue can no man tame” (James 3:8). Notice that he does not say the tongue cannot be tamed. He says no man can tame it. The answer is not simply greater self-control. We need the transforming presence of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. When God changes the heart, He begins changing the speech that flows from it. Kingdom transformation works from the inside out. Speak the Language of the Kingdom Every believer should ask: Do my words sound like the Kingdom I claim to represent? Our families, churches, workplaces, communities, and social media desperately need believers whose words bring life rather than destruction. The mature Kingdom believer does not merely know how to speak—he knows when to speak, what to speak, and when to remain silent. James 3 challenges us to surrender not only our hearts, minds, and actions to Christ, but also our tongues. Kingdom Principle: When Christ rules the heart, His Kingdom should become increasingly evident in our words. Kingdom Life University Discover the Kingdom. Declare the Kingdom.
